UNDERSTANDING SUBMISSIONS - BACKLINKS

As a website owner backlinks are important for search engine ranking. A Backlink has two parts. First, there is the link that is inserted in the article or directory posting when doing the submission. This is called a hyperlink.

The actual Backlink occurs when the search engine bots index the article/directory posting, and there is 'backlink' from the article/directory site to the owner website. You can check using one of the many Backlink checkers.

If the article/directory site is not indexed by search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, this is not good. There are thousands of article/directory sites that exist on the Internet, only a small portion of them actually get indexed by the search engines. If you do a Google or Bing Search of the title of your article/directory posting and you do not find it. It means that the submission was done to a site that is not indexed by Google or Bing. Or, it can mean that the site is not easily crawled by the search engine bots or the site has too many links and is considered a link farm. Most search engines do not index link farms. Caution: sometimes in take 6-10 weeks before a site is crawled and indexed by a search engine...so be patient.

Here's the Hard Truth: The reality is no one reads these article/article postings so there is little chance to generate traffic and clicks to the owner website. Unless you are indexed and ranked by one of top article sites like Ezine. The main reason why website owners should do article and directory submissions is to get backlinks. Caution: Do not get confused between a directory submission that is 'free' with a directory submission that costs money. Most directories that charge money to be listed are very good directories. These directories get crawled and indexed by the search engines like google and Bing. It is worth paying a little money to be in these top-quality directories. Most article sites allow postings for free.

It is critical that when doing submissions you start with a good list of sites. These article and directory sites must do three things: 1) The site must allow hyperlinks. Many sites do not allow hyperlinks. Without a hyperlink, you will not get a Backlink. Most sites that do not allow hyperlinks are poor quality sites. This means your submission most likely will not be indexed by the search engines. No one will find you. 2) The site must be crawled regularly by Google and Bing. A good way to check this is to Google the site name. Find a submission within the site, then Google the submission title. If it does not show up in the first 5 pages of the title search, it probably means the site is not being crawled. Hence, your submission is not being indexed. No one will find you. And 3) Always check your backlinks using a backlink checker. Good quality backlinks are like Gold.
